You finally made it! You met a huge milestone in your life and bought your first home. However, it also hits you: a house requires more furniture than your previous apartment. How are you supposed to fill all the space?

If you find yourself suddenly needing a whole house full of furniture, this is the article for you. We compiled our best tips on how you can furnish your home without leaving a big hole in your pocket.

Check Your Current Inventory

As much as you want to furnish your new home with brand new items and Pinterest-broad-worthy furniture, most of the time, it is not the realistic option. Some fresh pieces might be necessary but purchasing a new stock even if you have an existing inventory will just leave you bankrupt.

Sit down and take a long, hard look at everything that you own. Start with the staple pieces of furniture like bed frame and tables, and then move to smaller items like decorations, textiles, and accessories. Evaluate each piece based on their condition, usefulness, and if it fits the sense of style in your new home. Make a list and separate the pieces into categories: Keep, Unsure, and Donate or Discard.

Once you are down with categorizing, take a look at them once more. This time, decide where the items will be placed in your new home. Keep an open mind and consider alternative arrangements to maximize the pieces that you already have.

Purchase by Priority

Since purchasing your new home can already be a big expense, you may have a limited budget for furnishing once you already move in. Because of the excitement for designing their own space, a lot of people tend to make costly mistakes by giving the new home a top to bottom makeover or blowing an entire budget to make a room perfect.

This does not need to be the case. Rather than going one room at a time, ensure that you have a few essential items: a bed, a sofa, a dining table, and a dresser available before you move in.

Buy Pricey Items Secondhand

There are plenty of ways on how you can furnish your home without going to the pricey, high-end stores. If the price of the furniture you are eyeing for is more than your budget, you can find affordable pieces by purchasing second hand.

Search out different thrift shops and consignment stores and keep an eye on their changing inventory. You may also visit Craiglist or other for-sale sites. Local yard sales and flea markets are also good sources of secondhand items at very affordable prices.

Figuring out how you can furnish your home for the first time can be overwhelming. All of a sudden, you will find yourself in a lot more space. Keep these tips in mind before you jump in and blow your budget.
