Are you fascinated with single storey houses or bungalows? Did you know that the term bungalow was derived from a Hindi word? Let’s trace the origin of it.
Encyclopedia Britannica states that the “name derives from a Hindi word meaning “a house in the Bengali style” and came into English during the era of the British administration of India.” Bungalows are single-storey buildings.
The characteristics of a bungalow depends on what location or country you are in but mostly they are normally detached buildings that may contain a small loft. Bungalows are either single-story or has a second story built into a sloping roof, usually with dormer windows (for one-and-a-half stories). These also have usually gable roofs or pyramid roofs but nowadays bungalows with flat roofs or roof decks are very popular as well as those with shed roofs or skillion.
Bungalows are preferred because they are low maintenance buildings. They allow flexibility in their design, accessibility to the other areas since all the rooms are built within one level only, and of course, they are more affordable than two-storey buildings.
The floor plan shows two bedrooms with attached toilet and bath, spacious living room, kitchen, and dining and a staircase going to the roof deck. It also has a porch and a carport and with a spacious frontage.
It does not show that there is a common toilet but that can be built beside the kitchen just in front of the living room.
